The appellation “Grand Vin de Bordeaux ” is planted on nearly 118,000 hectares cultivated by just under 10,000 winegrowers. The main grape varieties are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc for red wines and Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, Muscadelle for white wines. Almost all the wines of Bordeaux are wines of assembly: Enter into their composition, several grape varieties. (Unlike Burgundy wines which are "monocépage" wines). In the Bordeaux area, soil, resulting from a strong sedimentation, is mainly made up of gravels in the west of the Garonne and the Gironde rivers and clay or limestone to the east of the river Dordogne. We can speak of a great heterogeneity, at the level of the soils, as well as climatic conditions and micro-climates. In all cases, Bordeaux winegrowers have always sought to obtain the quintessence of their vineyards and thus produce fabulous wines, wonderful nectars. Yet no one is really equal: some have a natural gift, others are lost in financial considerations. This is why a selection is necessary, whether one speaks of Grands Crus, Crus Bourgeois or artisans, or even generic name. All wine colors are represented in Bordeaux : Red, Rosé and Blanc. The latter have found a terroir of predilection on the Graves of the appellation Pessac Léognan. Red wines are intended to be harder in the south and in the region “Entre deux mers”, marked with finesse in the Libournais and Haut-Médoc. But here again, the work of the winegrower both in the fields and in the cellars, contradicts us. Real treasures exist, regardless of the appellation and a selection according to the vintages is necessary.
