The vineyard of Pommard is located to the south of that of the wines of Beaune . With an area of about 321 hectares, its terroir of soft brown limestones is particularly suitable for the production of the great red wines of Burgundy . This is why it is exclusively planted in Pinot Noir grape to produce red wines with dense and robust tannins: they are pruned for ageing. In their youth, the wines of Pommard are more closed than those of its neighbors, Beaune, but they gain with age, in roundness, in wealth. They have a deep red color, and they reach a very fine aromatic complexity where blueberry, blackberry, or even morello cherries give way to leather and chocolate. Wines become more spicy: they accompany perfectly the meats of game, duck or lamb, and at the end of the meal the powerful cheeses, such as Epoisses, Soumaintrain and other ripened cheeses. The Pommard appellation counts 28 climats (Plots) in Premier Cru, including the famous Rugiens or Epenots. The controlled designation of origin was among the first to be awarded in 1936, certainly in recognition of the undeniable character of the Pommard terroir. It is the best known of Burgundy wines throughout the world and is synonymous with wealth and opulence.
