The Volnay appellation begins south of the vineyard of Pommard, on the Côte de Beaune . As for the latter, only red wines are produced from Pinot Noir : the Volnay terroir is not conducive to the production of white wine. It is said that Philippe le Hardi decided to have Gamay's grape variety removed from Burgundy , which produced only "acid wines", in any case, too much for his taste, and to replace them with the noble grape variety Pinot Noir. Well done : The notoriety of the Crus of Burgundy is no longer to be done. Currently, the area of the vineyard is around 220 hectares, more than half of which are classified as Premier Cru. In all, 29 climats are classified in Premier Cru and 24 plots can give their name to vintages. For this, the wine must be produced from a vine located in one piece on a locality or a Climat. The controlled designation of origin has been given in 1937. The wines of Volnay are considered to be the most feminine wines of Burgundy , as their texture is velvety and silky, almost carnal ... All round, they develop beautiful aromas of fruits and flowers and, after several years, evolve towards Spices and prune. I happened to taste Volnay more than 20 years, and the prune and liqueur were present every time. A delight. Moreover, we can also talk about the red wine of Monthelie, especially in Premier Cru, bordering on the Volnay appellation and which have substantially the same characteristics and are still unknown to the public, but not lovers of great wines of good price quality ratio.
