The Saint-Estephe Controlled Designation of Origin was obtained in 1936. It is part of the Haut-Medoc vineyard , along with five other communal appellations. It is also the last communal appellation starting from the agglomeration of Bordeaux, towards the north. It delimits the terroirs of Medoc and Haut-Medoc and the vineyard, with an area of 1,230 hectares, is located on the west bank of the Gironde. The production of the AOC Saint-Estephe is entirely made up of Red wines obtained from the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Cot (Malbec) varieties. These are planted on Graves hillocks formed of small gravel, pebble, sand and clay. The latter is more present on the production area of Saint-Estephe than anywhere else in Haut-Medoc. The typicity of the wines is thus felt, and the Saint-Estephe are wines harder, more tannic than the other Crus Communaux. In spite of an undeniable typicity of the wines of Saint Estephe , the heterogeneity of both the nature of the soils and the geographical location of the parcels planted, makes the wines between the estates can be very different from each other. The choice of the proportion of the grape varieties in the blending of the wines is also preponderant. Historically, the Cabernet Sauvignon varietal represents the major grape variety of the appellation, but the desire of certain areas such as Château Haut Marbuzet to produce wines that are more delicate and less time consuming to "make" has propelled forward the Merlot grape variety. But do not be mistaken: The wines of Saint-Estephe are always resolutely wines of guard and take more roundness and complexity with time. Note that the appellation has five Grands Crus Classés, including Château Cos d'Estournel and Montrose, as well as some twenty Crus Bourgeois. Château Haut Marbuzet was recognized as Cru Bourgeois "Exceptionnel" during the 2003 classification. Take advantage of the tight and attractive prices we offer you all year round.
