The Saint-Julien Controlled designation of origin was obtained in 1936. It is part of the Haut-Medoc vineyard, south of Pauillac, on the west bank of the Gironde. It is also the river that shaped its soil, consisting of a mixture of small gravels, pebbles, sand and clay, agglomerated together and forming what are called "Graves", as well as Here and there, outcrops of marls. The geographical location and the nature of the soils allowed the vineyard to give among the best wines in the world. The smallest vineyard in the Medoc with its 950 hectares of planted vines, the Saint-Julien appellation nevertheless counts eleven Grands Crus Classés in 1855, as well as many crus Bourgeois and artisans. The production of the AOC is entirely focused on red wines obtained from the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Cot (Malbec) varieties. The wines of the Saint-Julien appellation are of great finesse. The dark, deep robe opens with notes of black fruit, roasted coffee beans, and cocoa. The mouth is spicy, ample and long. It precedes a remarkable, fine and complex finale. Like all the Haut-Medoc wines, Saint-Julien wines are made for custody, but their finesse allows them to be consumed before ten years. It is nevertheless advisable to arm yourself with patience to appreciate all the complexity and the treasure that conceal the greatest wines.
