All of them are part of the Libournais region , east of Bordeaux , but compared to those neighboring Pomerol and Lalande-de-Pomerol, the Saint-Emilion appellation is a giant with its 5,600 hectares of vines dedicated to Production of red wines. Planted on a relatively heterogeneous soil (there are no less than 4 different characteristic soil types, clayey to calcareous in the heights of terraces), the Merlot grape (60%) dominates the Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon grape varieties. Thanks to this terroir with changing geology, Saint-Emilion wines can develop different characteristics depending on their geographical origin, but they nevertheless retain an undeniable characteristic marked by fine tannins, red fruit aromas and notes of sub- Wood complex. Their mouth is fleshy and of a beautiful amplitude. The wines of Saint-Emilion were awarded the protected designation of origin in 1936, and the vineyard is listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The "Grand Cru" qualification is obtained by a more restrictive specification, but the area of the Saint-Emilion Grand Cru is the same as that of the Crus simple. Thus the yield is limited to 40 hectoliters (100 liters) per hectare (against 65 hectoliters) and a breeding of 12 months minimum, generally in Oak barrel, is compulsory. Of course, the heterogeneity of the terroir may have an impact on the quality of wines in Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, but all producers reserve the best terroirs and cuvées for this production.
